Board Members
Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC)

Network Director: Renee Miller, University of Toronto

Renée Miller, NSERC BIN Network Director and Principal Investigator is responsible for providing scientific leadership and direction to the network. She is a member of the Board and Chairs the Scientific Advisory Committee.  Renée is a University of Toronto Professor and Bell Canada Chair of Information Systems. Miller is a world leader in information management, serving on the Board of Trustees for VLDB, one of the two top academic organizations for database research. She is a leader of the Canadian database community having served the Program co-Chair of the International VLDB conference, a premier international data management research conference. Miller gave the keynote at the 2006 Canadian Database Workshop. She is a co-founder of IBM’s latest data integration project, Clio, which forms the basis for IBM’s current product offering, Rational Data Architect. She received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their careers. She is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, the (Ontario) Premier’s Research Excellence Award, and an IBM Faculty Award. In Dec 2009, she was named an ACM Fellow for innovations in computing and information technology.

Associate Network Director: Raymond Ng, University of British Columbia

Raymond Ng, Associate Director, assists the Network Director in providing scientific leadership and direction to the network, and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee. Raymond Ng is a professor in Computer Science at UBC. His main research area for the past decade is on data mining and OLAP, with a focus on text mining and health informatics. He has published extensively on data clustering, outlier detection, OLAP processing, and text mining. He is the recipient of two best paper awards from 2001 ACM SIGKDD Conference (which is the premier data mining conference worldwide) and 2005 ACM SIGMOD Conference. He is one of the general co-chairs of the 2008 ACM SIGMOD Conference, one of the program co-chairs of the 2009 International Conference on Data Engineering, and an editorial board member of the Very Large Database Journal and the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering. One of his current research focuses on mining large amounts of unstructured text (e.g., customer reviews, user complaints, emails). He will co-chair (with Milios), the theme on Capitalizing on Document Assets (DA).

International Director: Jacob Slonim, Dalhousie University


Executive Director: Leslie Dolman, University of Toronto

Leslie Dolman, Executive Director, has overall responsibility for the business and financial management of the network. Leslie is an electrical engineer (UofT) with many years experience building university/industry collaborations.  Previous positions include serving as Executive Director of the Bell University Laboratories at UofT as well as Director, Research and Innovation for the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, UofT.

Network Manager: Annette Mayer, University of Toronto

Annette Mayer, Network Coordinator ensures control and accountability on a day-to-day basis, and will be responsible for all administration and communications. Annette holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business and has worked for many years in the field of communication. Prior to joining BIN she held the position of the Network Manager for NECTAR, (Network for Effective Collaboration Technologies through Advanced Research), an earlier UofT five-year strategic network.
